ENERGY REPORTING CAPABILITY OF POWER OVER ETHERNET (PoE) CONNECTED LIGHTING SYSTEMS - MARCH 22nd, 2017

DOE has published the first part of a study to explore the energy reporting capability of commercially marketed Power over Ethernet (PoE) connected lighting systems. The new report provides a brief background on the development of the various PoE technologies, ranging from standards-based to proprietary, and illustrates the convergence of PoE power sourcing capabilities and LED luminaire power requirements. It then classifies PoE system devices in relationship to how they're used in systems -- introducing clarifying terminology as needed -- and briefly describes different PoE system architectures implemented by various lighting manufacturers. A discussion of existing standards and specifications that address energy reporting is provided, and existing test setups and methods germane to characterizing PoE system energy reporting performance are reviewed.

Connected lighting systems that can report their own energy consumption can deliver increased energy savings over conventional lighting solutions by facilitating data-driven energy management. PoE technology -- in which a single Ethernet cable is used to both provide low-voltage DC power and enable network communication -- has the potential to bring this capability to mainstream lighting applications, and has become increasingly viable for LED lighting.

NYC BRIDGES AND TUNNELS TO BE DRESSED IN LEDs - NOVEMBER 15th, 2016

In New York City, a $27-billion capital plan known as the “New York Crossings Project” will focus on reconfiguring 10 bridges and tunnels to incorporate automatic tolling, enhanced security and resiliency measures, and public art displays. As part of the initiative, the New York Power Authority will begin installing LED lights on the structures in January. View the video of what’s planned:

Specifically, each redesigned toll plaza will feature a dawn-to-dusk color-changing light show dubbed “The City That Never Sleeps,” visible from miles away. As the toll plazas transform into “modern transportation gateways,” tunnel plaza walls will become “veils” that shield security equipment and double as LED message boards. Meanwhile, gantry structures for automated tolling will feature an artistic “wave” design constructed from chainmail fabric that moves with the wind.

New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, hopes the applications of these lights will become tourist attractions in and of themselves.

NEWPORT VENTURES DOING MORE BLOWER DOOR AND DUCT TESTING AS BUILDERS READY THEMSELVES FOR THE 2015 ENERGY CODE - AUGUST 1st, 2016

Many people look forward to selecting paint colors, countertops and appliances when designing their new homes. One other item that they may want to add to the list is how tightly the home is built.

"Having a blower door test helped validate the quality and energy efficiency we are getting with our new home. With rising energy costs its great piece of mind that any preventable issues with the home were addressed and we will spend less on heating & cooling as a result."

- New Homeowner, Ballston Lake, NY

Recently a builder in the Capital District contacted Newport Venture’s asking us to visit one of their newly framed homes. The reason was to make sure this home would pass a blower door test with results at or below 4 ACH@50 Pascal’s. The new energy code requirement of 3 ACH@50 Pascal’s does not go into effect until October of this year. The reason for this request was so that the builder would meet the requirement as part of the contract agreement with the new homeowners. Read more...

BLOWER DOOR & DUCT BLASTER TESTING FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY - MARCH 24th, 2016

Recently Matt Evans from Newport Ventures demonstrated the use of a blower door and duct blaster test on a new home. The tools used are referenced in the new Energy Code for New York due out this fall. The Michaels Group volunteered one of their Energy Star Homes as the meeting site to demonstrate the equipment. During the demonstration those involved talked about the measures needed to tighten new homes and the design possibilities for ducted returns. In this case the home had a central return installed thus negating the need to run returns to all rooms in the home. Instead, through the wall venting was implemented to keep the rooms balanced for heating and cooling comfort. Those in attendance gained a greater appreciation for what code officials will be looking for and strategies to meet or exceed the pending requirements.

A special thank you to John Ciovacco of Aztech Geothermal for taking the pictures.
