HIGH PERFORMANCE HOMES
BUILDER CASE STUDIES

The New York State Energy Research Development Authority (NYSERDA) developed the High Performance Residential Development Challenge (HPRDC) program to provide builders with incentives and experience in building high performance, energy efficient homes. Homes in the program are challenged to meet HPRDC’s demanding energy efficiency benchmark of performing 60 percent or better than homes built to the 2004 International Energy Conservation Code.

Newport Ventures served as the building consultant on the project, constructed energy models of the Challenge and reference homes, and worked with builders to redesign home plans to improve energy efficiency. Additionally, the incremental costs associated with energy efficiency improvements were quantified to help the builder and project team make cost-effective decisions. Finally, to help compare the Challenge home to the builder’s typical (or “reference”) home, short-term energy tests and long-term utility bill monitoring were conducted.
